Time Stand Still

Way back when I was living in a college dormitory, my roommate & I hung a white board on our door for visitors to leave messages. For all I know, people still do this…
I got into the habit of writing a brief ROCK QUOTE on a corner of the board –a phrase, a line or two of a song– that shared what was on my mind that day.

Today, I am listening to Rush –the music group, people, NOT the ranting lunatic!– after being reminded of the preciousness of life and inspired by the bloggers who recently wrote about it. (Thanks, David, Moo and Mary Alice!)

TIME STAND STILL

I turn my back to the wind
To catch my breath
Before I start off again
Driven on
Without a moment to spend
To pass an evening
With a drink and a friend

I let my skin get too thin
I’d like to pause
No matter what I pretend
Like some pilgrim–
Who learns to transcend–
Learns to live
As if each step was the end

Time Stand Still…
I’m not looking back
But I want to look around me now
Time Stand Still…
See more of the people
And the places that surround me
Now
TIME STAND STILL

Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger
Experience slips away…
Experience slips away…

TIME STAND STILL

I turn my face to the sun
Close my eyes
Let my defenses down —
All those wounds
That I can’t get unwound

I let my past go too fast
No time to pause —
If I could slow it all down
Like some captain
Whose ship runs aground —
I can wait until the tide
Comes around

Time stand still…
I’m not looking back
But I want to look around me now
Time stand still…
See more of the people
And the places that surround me
Now

Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger
Make each impression
A little bit stronger
Freeze this motion
A little bit longer

The innocence slips away…
The innocence slips away…

TIME STAND STILL
TIME STAND STILL

I’m not looking back —
But I want to look around me now
See more of the people
And the places that surround me
Now

TIME STAND STILL

Summer’s going fast —
Night’s growing colder
Children growing up —
Old friends growing older
Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger

Experience slips away…
Experience slips away…

The innocence slips away…

Lyrics by Neil Peart
Music by Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson

Just for David: I didn’t know if you were familiar with the song, but just in case you were, I went over the lyrics 5x with the song playing. I printed them exactly as sung (instead of exactly how they are printed on the CD jacket)

  1. I grew up in the south and my mom told me Rush was the music of Satan.

Needless to say, I loved it!

  2. hee, i defintely had the whiteboard on my college door. although i never did anything so cool as write rock lyrics on it..!

  3. I grew up near where Rush was from in Canada and I still think TOM SAWYER is HARD TO BEAT. And then there was the work Getty Lee did with Bob and Doug MacKenzie…classic, yeah!

  4. I had a white dry erase board. Oh, I still do. 🙂

Always lists and notations and stuff. I did let friends sign it when they came over though!

    Good lyrics!

  5. I had one of those white message board things on my dorm room door too. I had to take it down cause the RA kept complaining about all the vulgar messages people were leaving. haha

  6. yeah, I gotta post this stuff…

  7. Never been the biggest RUSH fan ( I know, Blasphemy!!) most of the guys in my H.S. were big into them, but I know they were a technically great band, and good lyrics, just never appealed to me.

    Great post though!

  8. ahh that last verse really get me. Thank you.

  9. Thank you!
I have to tell that this is cool on so many levels.
The first is that I am a huge Rush fan. Growing up in Scarborough Ontario, Rush played our high school dances at least once a month. They soon went on to greater things and I followed them.
I have not seen the lyrics in so long, so this was a trip for me.
    Many and much thank you.
    It meant much to me.

    David

  10. Not all that much has changed. Aren’t our blogs essentially an electronic white board?

  11. Ahhh, Geddy & the guys. Tom Sawyer is a classic.

  12. LOL…yes, the white boards. My roommates and I didn’t have them, but others did.

But Hilary is right…aren’t these spaces we occupy in cyberspace the same thing? 🙂

  13. My husband lurves Rush.

    I lurve my husband.

    I do not lurve Rush.

(That was like a logic game, huh?)

    XO

P.S. Yes, you can sign. I did an update on my blog to clarify. Thanks!
