Kyrie Eleison
Kyrie EleisonThe wind blows hard against this mountain side
Across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide
Setting my feet upon the roadMy heart is old, it holds my memories
My body burns, a gem-like flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine
Is where I find myself againKyrie Eleison
Down the road that I must travel
Kyrie Eleison
Through the darkness of the night
Kyrie Eleison
Where I’m going will you follow
Kyrie Eleison
On a highway in the lightWhen I was young I thought of growing old
Of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road
Or only wished what I could beKyrie Eleison
Down the road that I must travel
Kyrie Eleison
Through the darkness of the night
Kyrie Eleison
Where I’m going will you follow
Kyrie Eleison
On a highway in the light
Around the same time this song became popular, I was attending a weekly Compline service at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle. The Kyrie was hauntingly beautiful to me when sung as a Gregorian chant:
Lord have mercy upon us
Christ have mercy upon us
Lord have mercy upon us
Our choir did this once. It is lovely, isn’t it?
Ooh! Haven’t heard this in a LONG time! I think this is one of those songs that Critter also likes and wouldn’t believe was older than she is. I really should look into getting an iPod – stuff like this needs to be resurrected.
When I was growing up in the Catholic Church, we recited the Kyrie every single Sunday of my life.
Kyrie Elieson
Christe Elieson
Kyrie Elieson
(chest thumping and all!)
I remember when this song came out – and I remember having very mixed emotions about it. I thought it was a beautiful song — but I wasn’t sure that I “approved” of Kyrie being sung in this context! LOL!
I’ve come a looooong way Baby! Now I approve of ANY mention of ANY part of the Holy Trinity at ANY time! Praise Him – one way or another – just PRAISE Him!
