Helping

When I was a kid, Marlo Thomas and friends created a project called Free To Be You & Me

I cannot tell you how many times I listened to that wonderful album, but today I still have those songs run through my head at random times.  Some tracks are silly and some are poignant, but the song that is running through my head today is “Helping” which was sung by Tom Smothers.

Lately there has been a lot of discussion about hate and flaming on the internet. Yesterday it was the hot topic over at The Women’s Colony.  Melanie wrote Ten Tips For Making Friends and Influencing People which really resonated with me, especially as I wrestle with who I am and how I come across to others …particularly when I want to talk about faith.

“Some kind of help is the kind of help that helping’s all about
And some kind of help is the kind of help we all can do without!”

from the song “Helping”

Please discuss.

  1. The only way I knew Marlo Thomas was from That Girl. I loved that show. Thanks for the info on this. I love that photo. Spring is coming that’s for sure. I think my friend you come off as a very wonderful, sincere, loving and caring person. As you know I’m not much into faith but that hasn’t stopped you from reading my blog and just putting up with me being me. Sign of someone well grounded 🙂

  2. I know that song. I didn’t know it was Tommy Smother’s.

Funny I should come to this post directly from Doug’s blog. Someone left an insulting comment toward Thom. She’s known for targeting people who are smarter and funny then she can ever hope to be and ridicules them.

I, of course, opened my mouth and defended Thom, so I am probably her next target.

  3. interesting! in general, i don’t give a flying monkey how much or how little faith someone has. i DON’T generally want to discuss anyone’s faith with them, however. but this is YOUR blog! discuss what you want to discuss 🙂

  4. I think we all just have to do the best we can to let Christ shine through us… ALL the time. Regardless of where we are or when we are or what we want to discuss, where we want to discuss it – or who we want to discuss it with. As Thumper would say… If you can’t say something nice… don’t say nuthin’ at all… UNLESS you’re teasing and playing with Thom! 😉

Myself, I stay away from flamers blogs, and flaming discussions — because I’m human and am likely to be drawn in and open my BIG mouth. And Jesus warns me to “watch the company I keep”…

  5. I am still someone who struggles with what I believe.

However I love coming here for the gentle space it provides me and reading the words of a woman with certainty in her heart.

  6. I remember Free to be You and Me well.. though not the music. I was babysitting my niece when that book came out and I read it to her repeatedly. It had a great collection of stories, plays and poetry.

  7. I love Marlo and Melanie and You!

  8. Girlfriend, let me assure you that you shine with the love of Jesus like a newly minted coin. 1 Peter 2:4-5 reminds us to be living stones (memorials) of Christ’s presence upon this earth. Discussions of faith will ALWAYS cause controversy because the enemy’s favorite game is to try to cast doubt. Keep being you and share your thoughts! Love ya!
