WWC twice over!

I missed the last Weekly Words Challenge, so I’m making up for lost time tonight with two week’s worth of words.

Last week’s words were PHONE and KEYS:

And this week’s words, in a nod to Mardi Gras, have been BEADS and COSTUME:

Mardi Gras Beads

BEADS of water on the windshield

Marching Band parading in COSTUME

Halloween Costumes

Happy News!!

The Weekly Words Challenge photo meme is NOT dead after all!

Janet — the brilliant force behind Fond of Snape — is the new Head Spork. 😀

She has already posted next week’s assignment over at the WWC flickr site.

The WWC also has a facebook page for those who don’t mind having their worlds collide.

The words for the week of January 5-12 are “chip” and “new” … as they say, HAPPY SNAPPING! 😀

WWC #106: Sit & Fall

I need to apologize to my wonderful & faithful readers. The posts you have been reading are mostly pre-scheduled (with a tiny bit of last-minute editing) because I have been so very busy.  And because I have been so very busy, I have not been able to reciprocate by visiting your blogs for the past few days.  Can I blame my mother?  LOL  Actually, I have been extra busy because my mother has been here visiting me!   😛   She leaves tomorrow morning and life will return to our normally busy schedule.

In the meantime…

It’s Tuesday!

2009 October 151

FALL is my favorite season and I love all of the warm, bright colors found in nature (which is kind of funny, since orange is not my favorite color).

2009 October 156

Here is a pile of my volunteer “baby pumpkins.”  I threw out some old mouldy ones last FALL into the compost heap, and we got a nice little crop this year… not counting what the deer ate. 😛

Our leaves are truly beautiful this FALL

and sometimes the weird fungus that attacks leaves and looks/feels like spikes!

Ella was too excited to SIT

Ella was too excited to SIT

Last Wednesday, I met Melli for lunch to return Ella to her rightful home.  We had a lovely lunch at Brio.  Ella enjoyed the crispy Italian bread…

…and then she ordered a scrumptious lobster bisque!  Mmmmmm….

I think only lobster could inspire Ella to SIT still for so very long. 😀

I was impressed by the DEPTH of commitment this Civil War reenactor exhibited.  We had a 20-minute conversation about what he does and why.

This is the watermelon that survived in the garden this year.  I *think* it was started by Snakemaster in his Sunday school class.  EB has his hand on it, but you should know that EB is a 17yo, 6’1″ high school junior.  We forgot to weigh this beauty but we think it was at about 30 pounds!  Below is a sweet juicy slice (plate made by Gary Rith).

Need a course in WWC 101?

So what IS the Weekly Words Challenge ?  It is a photo meme played out individually on blogs, facebook and flickr.  Each Tuesday we are given a few words to photographically interpret and post for the following Tuesday.   Originally started by Oddmix (sadly no longer blogging), it is managed by the beautiful and talented Tink.   Jay keeps the WWC going in the blogworld side of things while Tink is hosting over on facebook … and then there’s always flickr.

Next week’s words are “Go Green” and square — Join us! :D

WWC #100: Light ‘J’

This week’s challenge was to photograph LIGHT (either meaning) and the letter J.

Old LIGHT

Old LIGHT

This is the original Fresnel lens for the Cape Disappointment lighthouse on the Washington Coast (northern side of the Columbia River).  Can you imagine how much work it would be to put all of those pieces of glass in just the right places AND keep them clean and shining?  Whew!

This LIGHT is more modern but not as pretty as the Fresnel lens.

Bonus Pic: I didn’t take this one — MusicMan’s buddy took it on a youth group trip last year — but it was a fun shot and I wanted to share it with you this week. 😛

WWC #99: Earth 8

This week’s assignment was to focus on and interpret the number 8 and the word, EARTH.

WWC #93: SOUTH of the letter “O”

The Beautiful South

The Beautiful SOUTH — Restaurant, Lounge, and Coffee Bar (depending on what time of day you go)

I was driving up the road toward my little town and 2 things struck me:  1) There is my WWC picture for this week!  And, 2) I live in the South.  Technically.  I’m in an area that had very mixed loyalties during the Civil War, thanks in part to the Quakers who had settled in this locale.  I’ve never seen a Confederate flag flown here except for the tiny cemetery at a nearby battlefield.
Last year, I read Confederates In The Attic, by Tony Horwitz.  This book was eye-opening for me.  At the end of each chapter, which often left me a little shell-shocked, the author turns introspective and brings the reader along with him.  I found it to be an attitude check, a heart check.  I’m not a Southerner and I’m not a Yankee.  I’m from the [beautiful, gorgeous, beloved] Pacific Northwest.  I had not realized, prior to reading Horwitz’s book, the awful extent of racism that still pervades our country.

I was absolutely shocked on our first Halloween here… one of my kids dressed as a ghost, and not one, but TWO people asked if he was KKK.  Granted, the first person was drunk, but I think alcohol just loosened his tongue to say what was on his mind. Needless to say, our ghost costume is no longer in use.

The Weekly Words Challenge is a photo meme hosted each Tuesday by Tink of Pickled Beef (and spork) fame. I’m a day late this week and short on photos/long on words.  Luckily, the WWC group is a forgiving bunch of folks.  A few people have made a cool button that links to a master list of regular paricipants, but I haven’t figured that one out yet. (HELP?)
